Requirements and setup

How do I install the mods?

Install BepInEx 5 once, then copy the mod's BepInEx folder into the game folder. The install page has the steps for Windows, Linux (Proton) and Steam Deck.

What do I need?

  • SimplePlanes 2 0.7.9. Each mod's page lists the game version it works with.
  • BepInEx 5, the 5.4.x x64 build, installed in the game folder. Use BepInEx 5, not the BepInEx 6 pre-releases.
  • The Gravy Mod Pack zip, or the zip of a single mod.

The mods run on Windows, and on Linux and Steam Deck through Proton.

Do I need the Gravy Mod Menu?

It's recommended, not required. The Gravy Mod Menu is where most mods put their in-game settings and status, and Extreme Weather's event buttons are only there. Without it, edit the .cfg files in BepInEx/config/.

Can I install only some of the mods?

Yes. Every mod is its own DLL and no mod needs another one. Download a single mod from its page, or take the whole pack and delete the folders of the ones you don't want from BepInEx/plugins/.

The Classic Islands work the same way: each island and easter egg is its own mod, so keep only the ones you want.

Will a game update break the mods?

The mods work with SimplePlanes 2 0.7.9. If a game update changes something a mod relies on, that feature switches itself off with a line in BepInEx/LogOutput.log instead of breaking the game, and the rest keeps working.

Multiplayer

Is it safe to use the mods online?

Every mod is made to be safe to use online. World-changing features are single player or host only, and nothing touches other players' crafts. Each mod's page has a Multiplayer section with the details.

Do the mods work well in multiplayer?

Not all of them yet. Multiplayer is experimental: Walkable Craft and Passenger Seats work well online, and the other mods run in multiplayer but still have bugs there. They work best in single player for now. The table below marks each experimental mod.

What do "Local only", "Host only" and "Others need it too" mean?

  • Local only: only you see or hear it. Nothing is sent to other players, they don't need the mod, and it works the same whether you host or join.
  • Host only: the main feature only works in single player or when you host. As a guest you get at most its local extras.
  • Others need it too: other players need the mod to see the effect.

"Alone" below means single player, or hosting with no other human players connected (AI crafts don't count).

How does each mod behave online?

ModOnlineNotes
Gravy Mod MenuLocal onlyExperimentalEach mod's tab follows that mod's rules. Extra Settings: Drag Scale is held at 1 in multiplayer; Length of Day applies to everyone when you host, as in the game's own settings
Air TrafficLocal onlyExperimentalEveryone with the mod (host or guest) sees their own traffic on their own screen; nothing is sent over the network and other players never see it. Online it has no colliders and can't be shot. It still avoids other players on runways and taxiways. The game's own random AI is left on in multiplayer
Flight MapLocal onlyExperimentalThe route autopilot only flies your own craft. Other players are shown at any range by default, like the game's own air-to-air display (Other Players Range limits it)
Classic IslandsLocal onlyExperimentalPlayers without the mods see you over open ocean where an island would be. Cthulhu's storm only happens when you're alone; the Brown Pearl only appears for the host and only fires when you're alone
PerformanceLocal onlyExperimentalThe road traffic cap only applies when you're alone (the game shares the host's Max Cars with everyone)
Graphics PlusLocal onlyExperimentalRendering only
Sound BarrierLocal onlyExperimentalBooms play only on your computer, also for other players' jets
Extreme WeatherHost onlyExperimentalOnly the host starts events. With other players connected, the shared weather and turbulence are left alone unless Share Weather With Players is on, funnels, waves and snow are only drawn for the host, and the tsunami is a visual wave only. Weather Life (rain on the glass, lightning, morning fog) is local and works for guests too
Sea TrafficHost onlyExperimentalShips exist only on the host's computer. With other players connected they're scenery for the host: no collisions, damage or targets (AllowInMultiplayer). Harbour lights are local and show for everyone with the mod
Night TrafficLocal onlyExperimental
Airport LightsLocal onlyExperimental
UpscalingLocal onlyExperimentalRendering only
Tree DistanceLocal onlyExperimentalRendering only
Ambient SoundsLocal onlyExperimental
BirdsLocal onlyExperimentalBird strikes only ever damage your own craft
SpaceLocal onlyExperimentalJet flame-out only on crafts your game simulates. Gravity falloff only when you're alone
Walkable CraftLocal onlyOther players see you ride along through the game's normal character sync
Passenger SeatsOthers need it tooEveryone who wants to ride, or to see riders sitting, needs it; the host doesn't. Players without it see passengers standing in the craft. The pilot keeps full control
More PlayersHost onlyExperimentalThe host needs it for a bigger server (up to 100 players). Guests only need it to see public lobbies with more than 10 slots in the server browser

Do my friends need the mods too?

For most mods, no: they're local only. The exceptions:

  • Passenger Seats: everyone who wants to ride, or to see riders sitting, needs it. The host doesn't. Players without it see passengers standing in the craft.
  • More Players: the host needs it for a bigger server (up to 100 players). Guests only need it to see public lobbies with more than 10 slots in the server browser. Without it they can still join by invite.
  • Classic Islands: players without the mods see you flying over open ocean where an island is. Friends with the mods see the same islands if you all keep the default positions.

Performance

Will the mods slow my game down?

Some of them add a lot to the world, so they do some work. Most have settings to turn them down. A few examples from the mods' own notes:

  • Classic Islands prepares each island's SP2 look a little at a time while it's still far away, and caches it on disk. The game still loads an island's terrain in one frame, so expect one short hitch when an island streams in. A lower LoadDistance saves memory.
  • Tree Distance uses about 70 bytes of graphics memory per tree on loaded islands (about 70 MB for a big forested island).
  • Birds only draws birds that are in view, and none spawn when the camera is more than 1.5 km above the ground.

My PC is slow. What helps?

The Performance mod is made for low-end PCs. Its Balanced, Low and Potato presets go below the game's own "Low", and they only ever lower your settings. It also switches on fixes for work the game does for nothing. The two options that change how crafts fly are off by default and kept separate from the presets.

Upscaling can also help: it renders at a lower resolution and upscales with FSR 1.

Troubleshooting

Where's the log file?

BepInEx/LogOutput.log, inside your SimplePlanes 2 game folder. Include it when you report a problem.

BepInEx doesn't seem to load

No LogOutput.log after starting the game means BepInEx isn't loading.

  • On Linux and Steam Deck, check the launch option: WINEDLLOVERRIDES="winhttp=n,b" %command%.
  • On Windows, check that winhttp.dll is next to the game's .exe.
  • Make sure it's BepInEx 5 (5.4.x, x64), not BepInEx 6.

A feature stopped working

If a game update changes something a mod relies on, that feature switches itself off and writes a line about it in BepInEx/LogOutput.log. The rest of the mod keeps working. Check the log, and include it when you report the problem.

How do I remove a mod?

Delete its folder from BepInEx/plugins/. The other mods keep working: no mod needs another one.

The mods' sounds are too loud or too quiet

The pack's sounds (Air Traffic, Sea Traffic, Extreme Weather, Ambient Sounds, Sound Barrier) follow the game's master volume but bypass its mixer, so the game's sound-effect volume doesn't apply to them. Each of those mods has its own volume setting.

Do the mods conflict with each other?

No mod needs another one, and several are made to work together. For example, Air Traffic uses runways added by other mods, Airport Lights lights the Classic Islands' airports when those mods are installed, Night Traffic drives Maywar's roads, and Upscaling's page explains how it works with Performance and Graphics Plus.

The mods' notes don't cover other people's BepInEx mods. If something breaks with other mods installed, take them out one at a time to find which one it is.

Content and credits

Is it free?

Yes. The mods are free to download and use. All rights reserved.

Is it an official mod?

No. Gravy Mods is an unofficial fan project. It isn't affiliated with or endorsed by Jundroo. SimplePlanes and SimplePlanes 2 are made by Jundroo, LLC.

Does the pack include the game's files?

No. The mods don't include any of the game's files.

Where do the sounds come from?

The sounds in Air Traffic, Sea Traffic, Extreme Weather, Ambient Sounds and Sound Barrier are from Pixabay, used under the Pixabay Content License. Most were trimmed, loudness-matched, looped and converted to OGG Vorbis for the game. Pixabay doesn't require attribution; they're credited here anyway.

Is the source code available?

No. The mods are released as compiled DLLs in zip files.

What else do the mods use?

BepInEx (LGPL-2.1) and Harmony (MIT) are used to build the mods but aren't included: you install BepInEx yourself. Air Traffic's airliner was made by the Gravy Mods authors.
